Have you ever felt totally overwhelmed by the idea of getting healthier? You know you should eat better, move more, and take care of yourself, but where do you even begin? Health and wellness can seem like an endless maze of confusing advice, trendy diets, and “must-do” workouts. But let me tell you: it doesn’t have to be that complicated.
I've been reflecting on my own health journey, and I want to share some simple, no-nonsense steps to help you get started. Steps that leave you feeling motivated, not stuck. So, let’s break it down. Here’s how to start strong and crush it!
1. Just Start!
The hardest part is simply deciding to make a change. That’s it—make the choice. Start with ONE thing. Whether it’s drinking more water, taking a 15-minute walk every day, or skipping dessert—choose something small and achievable. The key here is that small changes are more sustainable than an all-or-nothing approach. Progress is made one step at a time.
2. Know Your WHY!
What’s motivating you? Why do you want to make a change? Is it a dream goal, like fitting into your favorite outfit? Or maybe it's fear, like avoiding a potential health scare. Find your “why” and let it fuel you through the process. Your why will keep you grounded and focused when things get tough.
3. THINK SIMPLE!
I can’t say this enough: keep it simple! Eat real food. If your grandparents didn’t have it in their day, you probably don’t need it either. Stick to fresh meats, veggies, fruits, healthy fats, grains, and beans. Forget the processed junk, fast food, and seed oils. Your body thrives on the basics.
4. Fail to Plan, Plan to Fail!
Planning is key. You don’t have to have every meal or workout mapped out in detail, but take just five minutes to plan your day. Whether it’s writing down a grocery list, scheduling your workout, or thinking about what you’ll eat, having a plan in place makes all the difference.
5. MOVE IT OR LOSE IT!
There’s no “right” or “wrong” way to exercise—just move! Walk, stretch, dance, lift weights, or even play with your dog. Your body thrives on movement. When you stop moving, your cells start dying, so make sure you’re getting that daily dose of activity.
6. Make It Special!
We often forget that we get to eat healthy. We get to choose nourishing, fresh foods. Grocery shopping isn’t a chore; it’s a privilege. Make it a fun experience! Get excited about the fresh fruits and vegetables you’re picking up. Shift your mindset and embrace the abundance around you. You deserve this!
7. Find Support!
Let’s be real: nobody succeeds alone. Find someone who can support you—whether it’s a friend, family member, or coach. Having someone to help keep you accountable can make all the difference. Even the best athletes need a coach, and so do you.
8. Every Day Is a New Day!
One off day won’t ruin your progress. Life happens. So what if you ate a donut or skipped your workout? Just get back at it the next day. Progress is a long game, not a one-off “perfect” day. Keep moving forward, even if it’s just a little bit each day.
9. Give Yourself Grace!
This isn’t a crash diet—it’s a lifestyle. Healthy habits take time to develop, and that’s okay. Give yourself some grace along the way. There will be ups and downs, but that’s part of the journey. No guilt, no shame—just keep growing.
